Throughout this journey we call life, much of our identity is attached to what we do and where we live.
It seems, for many anyway, if you don’t have a firm handle on answering those two questions, we lack identity. In my journey we’ve changed location many times. At one point I believe we were counting something like 10 moves in 20 years. I’m sure we are beyond that now. With so many moves, the answer to the question of where do you live, becomes somewhat cloudy.
God’s Eternal Embrace
Even answering the question of what do you do can become cloudy with so many moves. Initially I moved for radio jobs. Then the moves revolved around ministry positions. But even then, with a firm answer of “I’m in ministry” in hand, the exact description of what I do for a living became cloudy at times. In the end, it’s really all about destination. How do we arrive at our final destination? What is our final destination?
I’ve been reading Henri Nouwen’s book entitled Discernment. This morning I read similar thoughts about identity and destination in his book. Nouwen writes, “I became aware that my final destination is not a place; it is God’s eternal embrace” (Page 109).
I guess the real question is not so much where do we live and what do we do, but one of how do we arrive in a place of God’s eternal embrace. The follow up question now becomes; Can we arrive in that place of God’s eternal embrace, while moving through this journey called life?
Enjoy the ride!
